History of the Keds Classic Men's Shoes

Keds Multicolor Shoe

Whether you are looking for retro-style classic men's flats or men's skateboarding shoes, Keds offers iconic low-top tennis shoes that work well for style and everyday wear.

How did Keds originate as a leader of low-top sneakers?

Keds got its start in 1916 when U.S. Rubber decided to launch a brand to sell its rubber-soled shoes. This first line, called the Champion, was canvas-topped and rubber-soled, and it became the first sneaker.

The first choice for the company name was actually Peds, which is Latin for foot, but that name was already taken. Keds, on the other hand, means moccasins and sounded stronger than the other alternative, Veds.

Thanks to Charles Goodyear's discovery of rubber vulcanization in 1939, the rubber used for the soles became more durable. This paved the way for the Pro Keds line that debuted in 1949.

They have even been the classic men's flats of choice for a wide range of celebrities.

In 1979 Stride Rite Corporation bought Keds from the US Rubber Company, and Wolverine World Wide acquired both of these companies in 2012.

When did Keds introduce men's skateboarding shoes?

Chuck-style shoes were introduced in the 1920s with the Chuck Tyler shoe by Converse. However, Keds had a competing line with Conquest in the late 1930s.

When skating took hold with American youth in the 1950s, Chuck-style shoes were the choice. This lasted until the advent of the skateboarding sneaker with the Randy 720, from the Randy Rubber Company in 1965. However, Keds are still one of the shoes of choice for skaters looking for low-top sneakers.

Why do they call Keds sneakers?

This nickname came from kids wearing the low-top sneakers, not making any sound on the floor as they walked. This allowed them to “sneak” around.

What is the comfort and size like?

Keds are known for their canvas uppers, which can be quite stiff when new from the box. However, with a little wear, they loosen up and become more comfortable.

The shoes tend to run a little longer than normal. However, the top tends to run a little small. This creates an odd dynamic of needing a larger shoe for overall width but then having it be a little long. See the manufacturer's site for details.
