The Nike Dunk Low Sneaker

The Nike Dunk Low Sneaker

Before its initial release in 1985, the Nike Dunk was originally named the College Color High because of the number of NCAA colorways it was scheduled to launch in. The name got changed to the Nike Dunk to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the NBA's first slam dunk. The Nike Dunk's design features are similar to the original Air Jordan, Nike Terminator and Nike Legend. Retros of the Nike Dunk first started releasing in the late 1990s into the early 2000s. The silhouette gained a following in the skateboarding community, and Nike turned the Dunk into a skateboarding sneaker in 2002, referred to as the Nike Dunk SB. The Nike Dunk silhouette has also seen collaborations with boutiques, fashion designers and athletes since its release.

Another rare colorway of the Nike Dunk SB Low is the Sean Cliver/Todd Bratrud "Strangelove Skateboards" collaboration. This Pink/Red/White colorway (CT2552-800) features a velvet upper and suede overlays. It initially retailed for $100, and resale values range from $1,200 to $2,000, depending on size and condition.

Nike Dunk vs. Nike Dunk SB

The Nike Dunk SB is specifically designed for skateboarders, while the original Nike Dunk was initially built for basketball and is now primarily worn for fashion. The Nike SB Dunk Low features a padded tongue, double stitching and an extra layer of cushioning for support in the inside liner. Modified concentric circles on the Nike Dunk SB's outsole are made of grippy hard rubber for excellent traction on skateboards. The SB Dunk Low features Nike Zoom Air cushioning, while the original Nike Dunk doesn't. Both sport Swoosh branding and overlays around the upper. Skate shops or boutiques with Tier 0 Nike accounts usually sell Nike SB models.
