How does the rating system work for Nintendo 64 games?

A game is rated by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, a nonprofit self-regulated organization that puts together a game rating system as follows:

  • Everyone (E): The game is generally suitable for all ages. It may contain minimal cartoon, fantasy, or mild violence. It also may use infrequent mild language.
  • Everyone 10 Plus (E10 Plus): The game is generally good for ages 10 and up. It may include more cartoon, fantasy, or mild violence, and mild language. It may also contain suggestive themes.
  • Teen (T): The game is generally suitable for ages 13 and up. It may contain violence, suggestive themes, and crude humor. It also may have minimal blood, simulated gambling, and some strong language.
  • Mature (M): The game is generally suitable for ages 17 and up. It may include intense violence, blood, and gore. It may also contain sexual content and strong language.
  • Adults Only (AO): The content is suitable only for adults ages 18 and up. The game may contain prolonged scenes of intense violence, graphic sexual content, and gambling with real currency.
  • Rating pending: The game has not yet been assigned an ESRB rating. This rating appears only in advertising materials related to a video game that is expected to have an ESRB rating given.
How do you care for Nintendo 64 cartridges?

If you take good care of your Nintendo 64 cartridges, including "Super Mario 64" and "Mario Kart 64," you should be able to play the games longer. You should store the cartridges in a cool, dry place. Keep the video games away from direct sunlight. If a cartridge gets dirty, clean it. Windex or other similar cleaners can be used on a Q-tip to clean the connector. Don't spray liquid directly on contacts, and avoid excessive liquid.

What can you do if a game isn't working?

If the game does not seem to be functioning in the console, here are some things you can do that might work:

  • Try pushing reset on your Nintendo 64.
  • Turn the console off and push the cartridge to the right. If that doesn't work, try pushing it to the left.
  • Take the Nintendo 64 cartridge out and blow into it. If that doesn't work, try blowing the other direction.
  • Try rubbing a dry Q-tip along the bottom of the cartridge to clean it.
