Use DVD-ROM Drives for Reliable Media Playback and Data Management

Before USB became the interface of choice for managing digital media and data, disc-based media like DVD were widely used. The acronym stands for Digital Versatile Disc and it uses a laser-affected material underneath to record and read data. Many modern computers still include DVD-ROM drives in their hardware because of how widely it was adopted, and in fact, many pieces of software are still housed in DVDs.

What Are the Types of Samsung DVD-ROM Drives?

  • Desktop: This type of Samsung drive is meant to be installed internally into a desktop computer. They are thicker than their mobile counterparts and have rugged plastic disc trays, which often include side rails to allow the placement of discs even if the desktop is oriented in a way that it is lying on its side. Many of these devices are combo drives, meaning they can not only read but also write data onto DVDs.
  • Laptop: These drives are slimmer and made of an aluminum material for its low weight and cost. Because of space constraints, the optical reader or writer is incorporated into the disc tray and relies on a fastener in its spindle to hold the disc in place as it spins.
  • External: These drives provide the best of both worlds in terms of portability and rigidity. Many of these drives connect to the computer through a USB port as opposed to internal variants that use Serial ATA connections for transmitting data. These have compact designs notwithstanding their larger size compared to internal laptop disc drives.

What Are the Advantages of Using DVD as Storage Media?

  • Accessible: Because of the low production cost of DVDs, they are relatively inexpensive to buy in bulk. This gives you plenty of discs on which to store important data for archiving or for distribution of your work. Many school and business computers along with automotive media players still include DVD slots as well.
  • Compact: These discs are thin and easy to stack. They may also be labeled easily and stored in neat and uniform rows. This gives you the ability to organize and sort your data and backups easily.
  • Rewritable: A particular type of DVD called DVD-RW and DVD+RW allow their data to be written and overwritten multiple times. Some models can take up to a thousand rewrites before needing replacement. Data capacity can also be doubled by opting for their dual-layer counterparts so that you can store up to 8.5 GB into a single disc. This feature is indicated with a "DL" at the end of the disc model name.
